Pine Apple Bag
The original unaltered pineapple-shaped bag pattern as given by Mrs Gaugain in 1842. Knitted top-down, inside-out and in the round on four needles using four shades of green and four shades of yellow with optional beads. The bag is knitted from the inside but uses the purl side as the right side.
The alternative recommendation is ‘Berlin wool’ on Size 16 (1.6mm). There is no direct equivalent in modern UK or US sizes, use either 1.5mm/US 000 or 1.75mm/US 00.
Various versions of the pattern are available online. The original pattern together with smaller versions and other items using the pineapple stitch were published on glassoffashion.co.uk in 2007. Another smaller version and copy of the original was published on gancedo.eu in 2008. Finally a larger version by Franklin Habit was published in 2012 in Knitty.
