Located in the most northerly reaches of Quebec, the Parc National des Pingualuit is found in the centre of the Ungava plateau and protects a meteoritic crater filled with exceptionally clear blue water. From the rim of the Pingualuit crater a panoramic view of the almost-lunar tundra stretches to the horizon. Beyond Pingualuit crater, the tundra of Parc National des Pingualuit is flat and amazingly regular. The treeless expanse lends itself perfectly to nature and wildlife observation, as well as recreational activities like hiking in summer and cross-country skiing in winter.
The Pingualuit shawl is a circular shawl featuring motifs inspired by the shapes of tundra plants; spear-like cottongrass seed heads, cushiony mounds of moss campion, and the blunt paired leaves of bearberry. Worked in a sport-weight yarn, it is lightweight to wear but cozy enough to cut the wind. Perfect for an endless Arctic summer’s day.
Materials Needed:
- @1400-1450 yards sport weight yarn sample worked in a cotton wool blend
- 3.75mm (US 5) circular needle or size needed for gauge
Optional:
- dpn needles in the same size as gauge needle for cast on and first rounds
- unique stitch marker to mark beginning of round
- 35 additional stitch markers
Gauge: 23 stitches x 30 rows over 4”/10cm in stocking stitch after blocking.
Note that I do not consider gauge to be essential for a lace shawl. Instead, I recommend swatching for a fabric you like. If your gauge is markedly different from that given in the pattern, you will need to adjust your yardage accordingly.
