This hat gets its name from the fact that it uses a 38-stitch pattern repeat in the Fair Isle brim portion. I worked at many permutations until I achieved the right design that could properly repeat within the 152 stitches used for the hat. I refer to this as a “special” repeat due to the peculiarity of the number of stitches (38) because I wanted to design a pattern that fit within the total number of stitches, rather than a design that determined the total number of stitches. This hat also incorporates a “Latvian Braid” as an added embellishment. I thought it would better emphasize the brim from the rest of the hat. I also thought it added another dimension of beauty. The chart that accompanies this pattern identifies the rounds in which the Latvian braid occurs.
