This top-down crescent shawl combines the texture of stockinette and garter stitch stripes with the elegance of lace. Starting with a garter tab, the shawl gently increases every right side row to form a lacy center panel flanked by more solid sections. The leaf motifs that cascade down the center of the shawl grow in size as the shawl gets wider, and a picot bind-off gives the bottom edge a frilly finish.

To knit this pattern, you need to know how to:

  • do a provisional cast on (any method),
  • knit and purl when working flat,
  • do directional increases (m1L and m1R),
  • do a centered double decrease,
  • work a lace pattern from a chart or written directions,
  • do directional decreases (k2tog and ssk), and
  • do a cable cast on (for picot bind off).

The lace panel in this shawl is both charted and fully written out.

A word about yarn: The sample of this shawl used every bit of one skein of the recommended yarn. Please be aware that even slight differences in gauge can cause the amount of yarn used to vary. Be sure you have enough yarn to complete your project.
