As a kid, I used to love drawing intricate, convoluted mazes on loose leaves of printer paper. I tried to capture that same sense of excitement in this garment — the desire to create a complex, all-consuming puzzle that I could get lost in.

My sample was knit in a size 2 and my chest measurement is 33.5” (5.5” positive ease). If you’d like a similar fit to mine, I recommend aiming for between 4 to 6 inches of positive ease, though of course if you prefer more or less, that’s fine too!

Construction: Pipe Dream is worked seamlessly from the top down. First, the neckband is worked in 1x1 twisted ribbing, followed by some short rows to raise the back neck. The yoke is worked in stranded colorwork. Then the sweater is divided for body and sleeves and both are finished off in the round. A second round of short rows is worked at the body’s back hem to lengthen it.

Sizes: 1 (2, 3, 4, 5) (6, 7, 8, 9)
Recommended yarn: Tukuwool fingering (100% Finnish wool, 404 yards per 100g) or other fingering weight yarn. Note that CC must be the darker of the two colors, or the pattern won’t show up correctly!
Yardage: 1125 (1251, 1397, 1516, 1722) (1839, 1982, 2105, 2255) yards of MC and 267 (292, 317, 341, 413) (437, 485, 510, 535) yards of CC
Needles: US 3 (3.25mm) 16-inch and 32-inch or 40-inch long circular needle for main fabric or size needed to obtain gauge; US 2 (2.75 mm) 16-inch and 32-inch or 40-inch long circular needle for ribbing, and needles for working small circumference in the round, or one size smaller than needle used for main fabric
Gauge: 25 sts and 33 rows/4” in stockinette stitch (after blocking!)
Chest circumference (garment): 34.25 (39, 44.25, 49, 54) (59.25, 64, 69, 74.25)”
