Piping Hot sweater
Couldn’t resist the piping pun The Piping Hot sweater is worked in one piece from the top down.
YARN: DK weight yarn, approx 1182 (1293; 1360; 1414; 1522) (1587; 1661; 1716; 1770) metres / 1283 (1404; 1477; 1535; 1653) (1724; 1803; 1863; 1921) yards of main colour (MC) and 50m / 55 yards of contrast colour (CC).
Sample shown in Di Gilpin Lalland DK (100% lambswool, 175m per 50g skein) in shades Flame (MC) and Sea Thrift (CC). If using this yarn, you will need 7 (8; 8; 9; 9) (10; 10; 10; 11) skeins of MC and 1 skein of CC.
See notes on choosing yarn.
GAUGE: 22 sts and 32 rows to 4 inches / 10 cm in stocking stitch blocked. Suggested size 4 mm.
NEEDLES & NOTIONS:
-
4mm & 3.75mm circular needles of length 24” / 60cm or 30” / 80cm, depending on size
-
4mm & 3.75mm needle(s) of your preferred length for working small circumferences in the round (ie. DPNs, short circulars, magic loop) for sleeves
-
3.25mm needle of any length for neckband
-
You will also need a tapestry needle, 4 yarn bobbins, stitch markers, stitch holders, and scrap yarn.
SIZING: 1 (2; 3; 4; 5) (6; 7; 8; 9) detailed below, designed to be worn with approx 8” / 20 cm positive ease for sizes 1-3, approx 7” / 18 cm ease for sizes 4-6, and approx 6” / 15 cm ease for sizes 7-9. Sample shown is a size 2 worn on a 34” bust with approx 8” positive ease.
If you are between sizes, size down. If you choose a size too big, the armhole ‘seams’ will sit too far down the arm and the sleeves will be too long.
To fit bust: 28-30 (32-34; 36-38; 40-42; 44-46) (48-50; 52-54; 56-58; 60-62) inches / 71-76 (81-86; 91-97; 102-107; 112-117) (122-127; 132-137; 142-147; 152-157) cm.
Finished bust: 37 (41.5; 45; 48.5; 52.5) (56.5; 59.5; 64; 67) inches / 94 (105; 115; 124; 133) (144; 151; 163; 170) cm.
Yarn choices: Yarns that snap easily (such as unspun wools) are not suitable for this design. If using a laceweight silk mohair for the contrast, you will need to use 2 strands held together. The yarn used in the sample is very lightweight and sticky for a pure wool. I would advise against heavy / slippy yarns for this pattern, as the weight of the garment will cause the fabric to stretch out. If your yarn is on the heavier side, I would recommend dropping a needle size and / or choosing a smaller size to accommodate for the likely growth during blocking / wear.
