I’m so delighted to introduce you to my latest crochet design, Pippa the Penguin. This adorable penguin amigurumi was designed to give Pip the Penguin some company.
I originally drew out my crochet design idea for Pip and Pippa with Valentine’s Day in mind. But as we all know, crocheting and crochet pattern writing takes a wee bit longer than drawing an idea out.
This adorable penguin amigurumi is ideal for intermediate crocheters and is written in US terms in English only.
Pippa’s headband and bag are removable, making her a super cute but also a fun toy for the young ones to play with.
The penguin amigurumi itself requires minimal sewing as the feet, tail and wings are crocheted on as you go. Only the head and beak are sewn on. There is a little bit of sewing involved for the hat and the bag, however this is all explained clearly in the PDF pattern with photos which can also be downloaded for free from my website.
There is also the additional option of choosing embroidered eyes or safety eyes, and instructions are included for both in the PDF pattern.
What you need
- DK yarn (see yarn & colour key)
- Crochet hook size 2.5 mm (US C/2)
- Stuffing
- Tapestry Needle
- Scissors
- Pins
- 2 Stitch markers
- Safety eyes 6 mm (Option 1)
- Black embroidery thread (Option 2 - if you prefer to embroider the eyes)
Recommended Yarn
I used Rico Design Ricorumi DK 100% Cotton (25g = 57.5 m / 63 yds per ball).
Yarn Colours
Colour choice is completely up to you, however for reference the colours and yardage I used were:
- Light Grey (13 grams = 30 m/ 33 yds)
- Purple (21 grams = 48.5 m/ 53 yds)
- Black (2 grams = 4.6 m/ 5 yds)
- Dark Grey (10 grams = 23 m/ 25yds)
- White (2 grams = 4.6 m / 5 yds)
- Yellow (12 grams = 27.6 m / 30 yds)
- Berry (1 grams = 2.3 m / 2.5 yds)
Gauge
Gauge is not required for this pattern, however for reference my gauge for the amigurumi was as follows:
15 sc stitches on 5 cm / 1.96 “
16 rows on 5 cm / 1.96 “
Amigurumi Size
I used the following yarn with a 2.5 mm (US C/2) hook and the amigurumi turned out to be 13 cm / 5.11 “ high and 14cm / 5.5 “ wide from wing tip to wing tip. Please note: I do tend to crochet quite tightly, so your Pippa may turn out larger.
Additional Pattern Information
- Crochet skill level: Intermediate
- Pattern terms: US in English only
- Hook size: I recommend using a smaller hook size than recommended on the yarn label. This will stop the stuffing appearing through your stitches.
- Working in rounds: All parts within this pattern are worked in continuous rounds unless otherwise stated.
- Colour changing: Colour changes are required for the penguin’s head within this pattern.
- Eyes: In the PDF pattern you have the choice of using safety eyes or embroidered eyes. Instructions are included for both in the PDF version of this pattern. Please note that safety eyes are a choking hazard and are not suitable for children under 3 years of age.
