The Pirta sweater draws its inspiration from the Finnish ribbon weaving tradition. The colourful pirtanauha ribbons were commonly used in decorating clothing and linens.
The vibrant red was a popular colour used in weaving of these ribbons. Even though most often woven from wool, the pirtanauha ribbons in this sweater are not woven, but instead knitted.

The sweater is knitted mostly flat, sewn together and lastly, the ribbing for the hem, collar and the sleeves is worked in the round. The flat stockinette sections can be machine knitted or knit by hand.
