About this design
I continue to be fascinated by the geometry of motif-based crochet and this versatile cowl design gave me an opportunity to play with circles and equilateral triangles, as well as with colour. The design is based on two colours, with two different colour placement options. One option results in a stacked arrowhead colour flow, whereas the other produces an eye catching zigzag colour vibe.
For a simple colour scheme you can use two colours with high contrast or you can opt for something much more colourful. If you go down the colourful route, then you will find that this design is a fabulous stash buster as it provides an opportunity to use up all those lovely little bits and pieces of left over yarn that we all have kicking around in our stash. I’ve included a colouring in sheet so that you can play with your colours before you begin.
The design also uses as “join-as-you-go” assembly method and this is where the pivotal element of the design comes to the fore. The joining method at the triangle points is integral in ensuring that the triangle points stay sharp and that the overall fabric has uniform spacing for the individual motifs. I have included a separate photo tutorial to provide a detailed description of how to join your motifs.
Tension
A single blocked triangle crocheted with a 3 mm (US size C2, UK size 11) hook measures 6 cm/2 ins when measured along one edge. A close match for tension is important for this pattern in order to ensure that your finished cowl is the correct width and circumference. Please move up or down a hook size and swatch one more time if your gauge does not match.
Yarn
For a two-colour cowl you will need the following amounts of 4 ply/fingering weight yarn:
Colour A 233 m/255 yds
Colour B 233 m/255 yds
If you decide to go down the stash buster route, for a single triangle, you will need:
• 2.14 metres/2.3 yards for the centre disc.
• 2.52 metres/2.75 yards for the triangle edge.
The finished Pivotal Cowl contains 100 completed triangle units, which means that you will need a total of:
• 214 metres/234 yards for all the centre discs.
• 252 metres/276 yards for all the triangle edges.
Hooks
3.0 mm (US size C2, UK size 11) crochet hook.
Notions
Tapestry/darning needle.
Colouring pencils, crayons/textas.
