Plain Jack & Jane Watchman's Cap
This is the start of a series of hats that will include different styles/colors of bands and with or without embellishments such as pom poms (The pom pictured is 4.5” in diameter=huge!).
There will be blog posts for any extra stuff or tricky techniques, such as knitting from the wrong side of the fabric.
Sizes will include infant to large adult and many brands of worsted weight yarns will work. I have tried Cascade 220, Rowan Pure Wool Worsted, and Red Heart Worsted. All can achieve gauge.
This first, simple hat pattern will include a simple, single color hat and on option for a two-color one! This pattern is a wonderful place to start if you are just getting into knitting hats; beginners welcome! It’s also a lovely palate cleanser for anyone just coming off of a complicated knit.
Finished hat circumference (meant to be worn with 1-2in/2.5-5cm of negative ease): 10(12, 14, 16, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22) in/25(30, 36, 41, 46, 48, 51, 53, 56) cm
To snugly fit head circumference: 12(14, 16, 18, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24) in/30(36, 41, 46, 51, 53, 56, 58, 61) cm
Approximate corresponding ages: Preemie (newborn, 6-12mo, toddler, child, teen/SM adult, M adult, L adult, XL adult) (Note: ages are estimates only. For best results, measure recipient’s head circumference before beginning).
Finished length as written (including length of ribbed fold): 6.25(7, 8, 10, 11.25, 12.25, 12.5, 14, 14.5) in/16(18, 23, 25.5, 28.5, 31, 32, 35.5, 37) cm
Yarn: Worsted weight, such as Rowan Pure Wool Worsted, Cascade 220, or any yarn that achieves the correct gauge.
Gauge: 20sts/24rows/4inch/10cm in stockinette stitch to create a soft, pliable fabric with moderate stretch.
Estimated yarn amounts. These are estimates only. Your mileage may vary!
One-color hat, color (A) only: 45(64, 90, 125, 145, 156, 185, 204, 216) yds/41(58, 82, 114, 133, 143, 169, 186, 198) m
Two-color hat, color (A)/color (B): 20/35(27/50; 35/65; 47/90; 55/103; 57/110; 67/130; 73/142; 78/150) yds/20/33(25/46; 32/60; 43/83; 51/95; 53/101; 62/120; 66/130; 72/138) m
Materials: US6/4mm 16in/41cm circular needles and US6/4mm dpns or any needles that help achieve gauge; 6 stitch markers. (Note: For smaller sizes, dpns may be used instead of circular needles throughout pattern to accommodate the smaller number of stitches.)
