This beret-style hat is based on a pattern originally published in Farsi. A fellow knitter from Iran was kind enough to provide a loose translation as well as some guidance on the technique. I produced this pattern after making several hats of this kind, as my students expressed interest in it!

The pattern is considered intermediate level and does require a little experience. You will need to be comfortable with cabling, short rows, and picking up stitches, as well as whip-stitching. The hat is worked flat, using many short rows to effectively produce a segmented circular shape.

There are three sections: the triangular segments, the braided cable, and the ribbing. The ribbing is added after the first two sections are worked together.

I have used written instructions to illustrate each step of the cable; experienced knitters may already know how to do a lattice pattern with 3x3 cables.
