I went home to the snowy North over Christmas last year. We were welcomed at the airport by a blizzard! This beanie is inspired by the thick double brimmed hats my daughter borrowed from her cousins that kept her warm over the holidays! This is a thick, sturdy beanie that will keep your toddler’s ears warm all winter long!

I am partial to the pattern because you work the most beautiful and difficult design elements at the beginning with a provisional cast-on, cables, and a lateral braid, and then you are home free with stockinette and simple decreases for the body of the hat!

This hat is designed to fit a toddler, the inner brim circumference is 18” (47.5 cm) unstretched, and the brim to crown is 8.5” (21.5 cm). My daughter’s head is 18.7” (47.5 cm) and fits with plenty of room to grow.

Supplies:

• Berroco “Vintage Chunky” (50% acrylic, 40% wool, 10% nylon) Bulky Weight (7 wpi) 136 yds, 100 g, White (Approximately 120 yds, 88 g needed without pom pom, an additional 13 yds or 10 g needed for the pom pom). Or similar weight yarn to achieve gauge.
• US8 (5.0 mm) for beanie brim
• US9 (5.5 mm) for body of the hat, or size needed to obtain gauge. Pattern may be knit on DPNs, a long circular for magic loop, or on 2 circulars
• Tapestry needle
• Cable needle
• Stitch marker (1)
• Crochet hook (for provisional cast-on)
• Waste yarn
• (Optional) Cardboard cut into a 4” x 1.5” (10cm x 3.8cm) rectangle, or a pom pom maker

Techniques Used:
Single increases and decreases, cables, revers ribbing, provisional cast-on (instructions in pattern), and a lateral braid (instructions in pattern)

The pattern was tech edited for errors and test knit to ensure a beautiful final product.
