Pleiades Socks
When I designed this pattern I had been itching to make two-tone socks for years! Their classic look, and fun colour contrasts make for a great way to play with colours. (Who says you have to make each sock match either!) My barrier to using existing patterns was that most sock patterns are designed for wool yarn and weren’t entirely compatible because veggie yarns behave a bit differently, and this style is often made with thicker yarn like DK or worsted. If you’ve got some Vegan Yarn Pleiades Sock, and the right needles, then you’re all set to make some socks! And since there are six sizes, why not make them for the whole family?
I wrote this pattern using double pointed needles, but with a little knit-smarts there’s nothing stopping you from doing them with circulars working one or even two at a time.
Sizing:
A: Kids US shoe size 8-12 (age 3-5)
B: Youth US shoe size 1-3 (age 6-7)
C: Youth US shoe size 4-6 (age 7-9)
D: Youth US shoe size 7+/Womens Small-Medium (US shoe size 6-8)
E: Women’s Medium-Large (US shoe size 9-11)/Men’s Small-Medium (US shoe size 7-10)
F: Men’s Medium-Large (US shoe size 11-14)
A(B,C)D,E,F
If the wearer’s feet are wide, increase in the toe to the number of stitches for one size up, but work the length their regular size. (e.g. the wearer has shoe size Women’s 9.5 wide, cast on and increase stitches as in size F, but after the toe section colour change follow the rest of the directions for size E)
Techninques:
Judy’s Magic Cast On
KFB (Knit Front and Back, an increase)
Pick-Up, Twist and Knit
Decreases (SSK and K2TOG)
Kitchener Stitch
If you are unfamiliar with any of these techniques, there are many great videos online.
Supplies Needed:
50g(60g, 70g)80g, 90g, 100g of Pleiades Sock in MC (Main Colour)
15g(15g, 20g,)25g, 30g, 30g of Pleiades Sock in CC (Contrast Colour)
Errata
Toe
In CC, Using Judy’s Magic Cast On, Cast on 16(20,20)24,24,24 sts which will make 8(10,10)12,12,12 sts on each needle.
In the original version, this was written to set up with 18(20,22)22,24,26 sts, but this made it a little clunky when it came to having an odd number of stitches on the heel to deal with, so this makes it easier. Both ways are ok, but the new numbers of stitches make everything go more symmetrically.
A note on fit: This design is not ideal for feet with very high arches.
