This cuddly platypus amigurumi, Pluto the Platypus, is a variation of my original Phyllis the Platypus crochet design. The big difference is that this is an easy level crochet pattern, is quicker to crochet, and the end result is a lot bigger and cuddlier.
This pattern uses a chunky chenille yarn instead of cotton dk. All details are below, however as a quick summary on the difficulty rating, this platypus plushie does require being able to crochet in the round by starting with a magic circle or by crocheting a chain and working around the chain. As long as you are comfortable crocheting in the round, you should be able to crochet this platypus amigurumi.
The pattern is available for free on my blog, but if you’d prefer the ad-free version as a PDF download, this can be purchased from my Ravelry store.
Materials Needed
- Yarn: Chunky yarn. I used James C. Brett Flutterby Chunky in the following colours: Baby Blue (60 grams) and Beige (15 grams)
- Crochet hook: Size 4mm (G)
- Other materials: Stuffing, needle, scissors, pins, 3 stitch markers, safety eyes 12mm (optional - not suitable if item is made for a child under 3), optional dk cotton yarn for sewing amigurumi pieces together
Platypus amigurumi size
Using the yarn and hooks specified in this pattern, my Pluto turned out to be 25 cm / 9.85 “ high and 10 cm / 3.94 “ wide (across the widest part of the body).
Gauge
Gauge is not required for this pattern, however keep tension consistent throughout. For reference, my gauge was as follows:
8 sc stitches on 5 cm / 1.96 “
8 rows on 5 cm / 1.96 “
Additional Information
- Pattern language: English
- Pattern terms: US terms
- Stitches used: Magic circle, Single Crochet, Chain, Increases and Decreases
- Yarn: The yarn choice is completely up to you, and you can change the yarn weight, material, and colours based on your own personal preference. Just be aware that the weight of your yarn may impact the hook size you need to use and also the size of your final make.
- Hook size: I recommend using a smaller hook size than recommended on the yarn label for the amigurumi pieces. This will stop the stuffing from appearing through your stitches.
- Eyes: In this pattern you have the choice of using safety eyes or embroidered eyes. Instructions are included for both. Please note that safety eyes are a choking hazard and are not suitable for children under 3 years of age.
- Working in rounds: All parts within this pattern are worked in continuous rounds unless otherwise stated.
- Optional cotton DK yarn: Chenille yarn has a tendency to shed. To avoid shedding during assembly, try using a cotton DK yarn to sew your chenille amigurumi pieces together. You won’t see the cotton yarn when finished and it will ensure the pieces are sewn firmly in place.
