If you’ve ever been to Point Reyes, you know how gorgeous the viewpoint to the Pacific ocean is up there. This pattern recalls the mountains of California’s Coast, and the Pacific ocean waves, as they crash on the seashore, and all the beauty and bounty that the Pacific coast represents.

Knit in the round from the bottom up, this slouchy knitted hat pattern includes a minimal amount of colorwork, ideal for a new knitter who wants to know what this technique is about before venturing into bigger colorwork projects. It also includes an elegant slipped stitch pattern, reminiscent of the ocean waves, that is super easy to work and remember (hello TV knitting).

It is recommended to use two yarns with high contrast to get the best out of the pattern.

This pattern was written for heavy fingering-weight or sport weight yarn, and the contrast color yardage requirement is ideal to use leftovers or advent calendar minis.

Level = Curious beginner
Notions you need to know: Casting on, knitting and purling, placing markers, basic colorwork, slipping stitches, binding off.

Finished hat measurements (fingering weight) Recommended ease: -4” (-10 cm) / +2” (+ 5 cm)
1: Approx. 17“ (44 cm) total circumference; 8.5” (21.5 cm) tall from cast-on edge.
2: Approx. 19“ (49 cm) total circumference; 9” (23 cm) tall from cast-on edge.
3: Approx. 21“ (53 cm) total circumference; 9.5” (24 cm) tall from cast-on edge.
4: Approx. 23“ (57 cm) total circumference; 9.5” (24 cm) tall from cast-on edge.

Yarn:
MC: approx. 200 (220, 240, 275) yards 186 (201, 219, 251) meters of heavy fingering-weight yarn or sport-weight yarn
CC: approx 10g of fingering-weight or sport yarn

Shown here using Patons Kroy Socks in colorway Gentry Grey 166 yards (152 meters) 50 grams
And 10g for the contrasting color of Speckled Finch Advent Mini in colorway Golden Toffee.

In general, any yarn that yields between 330-380 yards per 100g will be a great fit. They will either be labeled as fingering or sport-weight. For the contrasting color, you can use fingering or sport-weight interchangeably (does not need to match the main color weight, as long as it’s fingering or sport weight).

Needles: Size US 4 (3.50 mm) and size 6 (4.00 mm) circular needle of your preferred size for magic loop, or DPNs or two circulars to work decreases.

Other notions: Stitch markers, tapestry needle, scissors, pompom.

Gauge
