This is a loosely-fitted hat with a cable brim. The brim is knitted separately as a flat piece, woven together to make a circle, and then stitches are picked up for the body of the hat.
It was designed for a wonderful vet (and is dedicated to all of the wonderful large-animal vets out there!) who worked tirelessly to save the life of a precious llama named “Pokey”.
