Pole
Jill Pole is the heroine from C.S. Lewis’ novel The Silver Chair. She is a British school girl who happens to find her way into Narnia with her friend Eustace and is given the task of finding and rescuing Rillian, the lost crown prince of Narnia. She then returns with Eustace in The Last Battle in order to help save Narnia from a false Aslan and is always referred to as a “Friend of Narnia.” But unlike Lucy Pevensie, Pole is never considered royalty, and throughout TSC, the reader gets the sense that she has remained much more grounded in her British roots.
In TSC, Pole, Eustace, and their friend Puddleglum travel to an underground watery world where the sun never shines. This always seemed dank and cold to me, so I wanted something that would help keep her feet warm when wading about in the cold water. Thick cabled socks would definitely do the trick for the practical Pole, both in Narnia and in Britain.
Techniques required: Chart reading, knitting in the round, picking up stitches, cables, grafting
Notes: I worked Pole using double-pointed needles, and wrote the instructions based on that technique. If you choose magic loop or some other method, please be aware that your needle count may differ during some of the instructions.
The sock is sized to fit a woman’s medium. Should you desire a larger sock, purl stitches can easily be added in between the cable charts.
