The oversized Pomelo Cardigan makes a wonderful layering piece for any summer wardrobe. The cardigan uses an allover lace stitch pattern to create a fluid, draping fabric, which can be closed with simple front ties. A structured collar and cuffs refine the silhouette. It’s worked in one piece from the bottom up to the armholes. Then the fronts, sleeves, and back are finished separately.

NOTES

• This cardigan is worked from the bottom up in one piece to the armholes, then the fronts , sides, and back are finished separately. The shoulders and sleeves are seamed, and the collar is worked across the fronts and back neck. The slip-stitch edging is worked on the hem.

• To lengthen the color changes, two balls of yarn are used starting at the same color and alternating yarn every two rows. To change strands, on the last stitch of each even row, yarn over as required, insert the hook in the last stitch, pick up both the old and new yarn and finish the stitch with both strands, turn, chain as required with both strands, then drop the old strand and work two rows with the new strand.

• To keep the colors in sync for the front and the back after separating at the armholes, continue the back piece with only one ball of yarn. For the right and left front s, use the second ball. Wind the remainder of the current color section from the second ball over the palm of your hand. To split the color into equal halves, pull from the inside and outside of the handmade cake for two equal parts; divide and work the front and the back with one of the halves until the color is used up. Divide the yarn in the same manner for the subsequent color sections.

• The first two sizes can be worked from one ball of yarn but the colors will change more frequently, and the color stripes for the fronts and the back will not match.
