Worked lengthwise from the bottom up with sections of geometric lace and lace Adventure Cables the Pomona Shawl starts with a bang and finishes with simple garter stitch. The combination of decreasing stitches and working crossed stitches shapes the lower lace section while the garter stitch section contains short rows to create a beautiful crescent shape. The pattern calls for a light fingering weight but a larger yarn could easily be used for a larger shawl (keep in mind that this change will affect yardage). The cables in this shawl move sections of lace stitches but do not have any lace worked over the cable crossing.

I especially love to work shawls from the bottom up since I find that my enthusiasm for the project is strongest at the beginning making the longest rows go faster, and when my attention span is waning the rows are shorter and in this case simpler. The stitch pattern for this shawl was a very organic process to design, when working the swatch I had the two vertical sections of lace planned out but the decreases and the placement of the top cables were very intuitive and not planned before hand at all. The stitch pattern reminds me of water reeds and the lakeshore, the flickering reflections off of the water surface as it dances among the vertical plant stalks.

18 sts and 23 ½ rows= 4”/10 cm over Lace Pattern after blocking.

Pattern Notes
This shawl is worked flat back and forth, the cast on is the bottom edge of the lace. It is essential to use a stretchy cast on for this shawl so that the bottom edge can be pinned into a scalloped edge when blocking. It is not necessary to lift the short row wraps in the garter stitch section, simply work across the wrapped stitches and they will blend into the garter stitch.
