Made in two simple panels, some of the colorwork you are seeing is technical - the “zig zag” is achieved by using multiple skeins in each panel and crocheting that in, but some of the other blocks appear because the yarn used has strong color changes.

So if you wanted to go with solid colors you would still stitch in the zig zag pattern.
