Ponderosa Sweater

A mix of soothing stockinette and flowing cables, Ponderosa Sweater is all about balance. Designed with a relaxed body, slim-fitting sleeves, and a unique crescent-shaped hem, it’s the kind of knit that finds its way into regular rotation—layered over dresses, paired with high-waisted jeans, or thrown on whenever a little extra warmth is needed.

The front features a braided cable motif, while the back keeps things smooth with stockinette. Since it’s worked flat in two pieces and seamed, you can pick what you feel like knitting each day—cables for interest or stockinette for a meditative rhythm.

If you love this design, check out its cable-knit companions: the cozy, single-skein Ponderosa Hat and the newest addition, Ponderosa Socks (coming soon). Each one takes inspiration from the original while bringing something fresh to the mix.

We knit ours in Pigment & Ply 100% Superwash Merino, a beautifully soft yet structured fingering-weight yarn that highlights the depth of the cables while keeping the fabric light and drapey.

Construction Overview

Ponderosa Sweater is worked flat in two pieces, front and back, then seamed together with mattress stitch. The cables flow across the front, while the back is kept simple with stockinette. Slim, tapered sleeves balance the relaxed body, giving the overall shape a modern feel.

With video tutorials included, you’ll be guided through key techniques like cabling without a needle, perfecting your seaming, and blocking for the best fit.
