Ponderosa Socks

We love a classic handknit sock—you’ll catch us rocking that Birkenstock-and-wool-sock lifestyle year-round. There’s just something about a handmade pair of socks that makes every step cozier.

Ponderosa Socks take inspiration from their namesake Ponderosa Sweater and Hat, beloved for their plump cables and timeless feel. These socks bring that same bold texture to your feet, blending rugged charm with everyday comfort. Knit from the top down with a classic heel flap and gusset, they fit like a dream and hold their shape beautifully over time.

We love Plucky Knitter Feet Fingering for its tight, round hand—it makes cables pop beautifully while keeping the fabric durable and soft.

Yardage & Sizing:

  • Yarn: Plucky Knitter Feet Fingering (90% SWM, 10% nylon, 425 yds / 115 g)
  • Yardage: 350 (425, 510) yds / 320 (388, 466) m
    • If making the largest size, consider a contrast heel and toe to avoid running out of yarn (~25g contrast color recommended).

  • Gauge (Blocked):
    • 28 sts x 54 rows = 4” x 4” stockinette in the round

Construction Overview

Ponderosa Socks are knit seamlessly in the round from the cuff down, featuring both charted and written instructions for the cables. The leg showcases bold, plump cables before transitioning into a classic heel flap and gusset for a comfortable, well-fitted foot. Cables continue down the top of the foot, while the sole is worked in smooth stockinette. The socks are finished with a clean, horizontal stitch transition and a Kitchener stitch toe closure.

This pattern offers a satisfying project with that timeless, hand-knit charm.
