There’s something with cables! I never get tired of them, and would typically use them in at least one of my designs each season. This time I had the children in mind.
Untypically (for me), I designed it to be worked on needles 4 mm/US6, in order to present a faster knit and a cardigan suitable for school and play.

Design and construction
The main attraction of this cardigan is, for sure, the panels of cables towards the fronts, on the back and sleeves.
The cardigan has a classic shape; the body is straight, the sleeves are worked with decreases.

The cardigan has a seamless construction.
The lower body is worked bottom-up and back and forth to underarms, starting from the ribbed hem, followed by the main-body with the cables on the sides of the fronts and centred back, and seed-st pattern between the cable-patterned sections. The sleeves are worked top-down and in-the-round to bind-off. Stitches are picked up and knit to work the neckline, which is worked in rib-pattern back-and-forth. Stitches are picked up and knit along the fronts to work the button-band and the buttonhole-band.

Finished chest circumference, when buttoned, after blocking/washing and worked at gauge: Size 1: 9 months – 1 year: 49 cm/19.25”
Size 2: 1 year – 18 months: 53 cm/21” Size 3: 2 years: 57 cm/22.5”
Size 4: 3 years: 61 cm/24” Size 5: 4 – 5 years: 65 cm/25.5”
Size 6: 6 years: 69 cm/27“

Materials
Yarn
I recommend any yarn with great stitch-definition that knits up to gauge.
I used 2 strands held together of the fingering weight yarn, “Merino Singles” in the colourway “Snow Illusion” from Martins Lab, to work the cardigan. This fingering weight yarn comes in skeins of 100 gr/3.53 oz, and 366 m/400 yards.
Of this specific yarn held double you will need approximately 660/800/980/1200/1350/1500 m = 720/875/1070/1310/1475/1635 yards. Note that if using a single strand of a DK weight yarn you will need approximately 450/525/600/675/750/850 m = 490/575/660/735/820/930 yards.
Needles Size 3 mm/US2.5 for the hem, cuffs, button-bands and neck-band. Size 4 mm/US6 for the main body/sleeves.
Notions 4 removable stitch-markers. A cable-needle. Waste yarn (or holders). Tapestry needle. Blocking tools. A row-counter is useful. Buttons, 14 – 15 mm/0.6 – 0.7” across.

Gauge
20 sts and 30 - 32 rounds/rows in seed-st pattern, after washing/blocking = 10 x 10 cm/4 x 4”.

There is a set-up schematic for the placement of the cables/seed-st of the body.
