Cotton (100% mercerized cotton, 16 oz/453 g, 1200
yds/1097.28 m)
Single motif shown in Colored Bird and Le Paon Cotton 3#
2mm (from Amazon).
Other size 3 crochet thread can also be used, suggestions
include Aunt Lydia’s Fashion Crochet Size 3, and Knit Picks
Curio 3.
Category 1 (super fine) yarn might also be used but the fabric will be softer. Suggestions to try include Hobbii Rainbow Cotton 8/4, and Paintbox Yarns Cotton 4-ply. Be sure to make a gauge swatch and adjust hook size as necessary.
Each square motif around the side is 4 inches wide. The joining round adds approximately .25 inches between each motif for a total size of 4.25 inches per motif. So the 5 side motifs will create a hat about 21.25 inches in circumference. This will easily stretch to fit an “average” head circumference of up to 22.5 inches without feeling tight. If you wish your hat to be larger, just use a slightly larger hook.
Also needed: 1.5 mm Plastic Hat Brim Wire, approximately 42 inches. (Available by the yard through sellers on Etsy.)
Tapestry needle for weaving in ends.
Optional, Heavy Duty Laundry Spray Starch
If you don’t need the opening at the back for a ponytail, you can simply sew those edges of the sides together before starting the brim.
