Designed with beginners in mind, if you’re ready to learn how to crochet granny squares then this pattern introduces you to 3 different versions:

  • the classic, single colour granny square with a single crochet border
  • an alternate, single colour granny square with a shell stitch border
  • the alternate, multi-colour granny square with a V-stitch border

All 3 granny squares are worked in the round, and all the rounds are joined. For each square, the pattern includes both written instructions and charts. In addition, links are included to YouTube tutorial videos.

To complete this project you’ll need:

  • For the coasters pictured I used Allino, by BC Garn, which is a DK weight yarn. If you’re a confident/advanced beginner then you should be fine using a plant-based fibre like Allino. But if you’re still just in the early stages of learning crochet then I’d recommend using a heavier weight, wool yarn, like Cascade 220 Superwash.
  • A 4mm crochet hook (or one that’s the correct size for the yarn weight you’re using)
  • Locking stitch markers
  • Yarn needle
  • I strongly recommend blocking your squares, even if you’re using a plant fibre. So you will also need Soak wash, plus either T-pins or a blocking board
