Port Rexton is Port Rexton in a sweater and a play on Zimmermann’s wishbone construction. Just like the placename, Port Rexton is angular and multi-faceted, perfect for the seaside, hiking, homebound or sitting in the Port Rexton brewery. It’s been on a really long journey, where will yours take you?

Lace and colourwork are charted only.

Notes

  • There are four sweater lengths to choose from! Cropped, semi-cropped, pullover-length, and tunic length. Shown is the cropped length on a 172cm / 67.75” height and short torso. Be sure to check the measurement page to choose your desired sweater length.

  • There is a pattern file and a separate charts file to download. Be sure to download both the pattern file and the charts file corresponding to the size that you are knitting.

Yarn

The Border Mill North Coast Tweed 4-ply (100% Shetland wool; 90 metres per 25 grams) in 15 colours (colours A through O listed below). If using sample yarn, the number of balls of each colour is listed. The total approximate yardage of each colour is also listed below. If you add length to the sweater body, then you will need more yarn than the listed yardage. For every additional 24 row repeat of the Fair Isle chart that you add to the length of the sweater, you will need an additional approximate 20 to 35 metres of colours A, B, C, H, L; 3 to 8 metres of colours E, F, G, K, M, N, O; 8 to 15 metres of colour I; and 11 to 18 metres of colour J.

Gauge

Fair Isle: 28 sts and 34 rows/rounds to 10cm / 4” with size B needles after blocking (or needle size required to match gauge).

Lace: 20 sts and 36 rows or rounds to 10cm / 4” with size B needles after light blocking (or needle size required to match gauge).

Needles and Notions

Gauge was achieved with the following needle sizes. To work the pattern as written, you must swatch and use a needle size that will result in the correct gauge after blocking.

Size A: 2.5mm (US 1.5) 60cm (24”), 80cm (32”), or 100cm (40”) circulars for single-colour rounds and for the corrugated ribbing at hem and cuffs; i-cord edgings

Size B: 3mm (US 2.5) 60cm (24”), 80cm (32”), or 100cm (40”) circulars for Fair Isle body; 60cm (24”) circulars or straights for lace sleeves.

Note: if doing the sleeves in the round you will need size A and B preferred needles for small circumferences.

You will also need:
tapestry or darning needle, stitch markers, removable markers.

Techniques

colourwork in the round (lower body)
colourwork flat (upper body)
corrugated ribbing
decreasing stitches in lace
welts
short rows
i-cord edging
