Porteau Knot
This pattern can be worked in any gauge. The finished dimensions are (very roughly) 25 by 50 sc. So if you make a swatch of 10 sc, and its width is 8 cm, expect the piece to measure about 20 cm by 40 cm.
The stitches used are mostly sc. The strands are shaped using increases (2 sc in same st) and decreases (slst2tog), and the outline is added in slip stitch. To make assembly easier, the knot it broken into 6 different strands, which are woven together and then sewn end-to-end. This pattern is not particularly difficult, and should be accessible to a motivated beginner.
For testing, I used Loops and Threads Soft and Shiny yarn and a 4mm crochet hook. It used less than half of a skein of the main colour, and maybe 100m of the outline colour.
This pattern was worked to test out alternate dimensions in the technique described in A General Method for Crocheted Knotwork. In particular, I was testing out chunkier strands. These strands are half as long as the default, and proportionally thicker. One result is that even an elaborate pattern like this one can be worked up very quickly. Another result is that the pattern is not as distinct, making blocking very important.
