Porthallow Cowl
The Porthallow cowl has been designed as a “choose your own adventure” pattern.
After a provisional cast on onto waste yarn, you will knit the colour work section, then pick from one of three lace options, then the colour work section repeats, then pick one of three texture section, then colour work for a third and final time and finish up with one of three cable sections.
The colour work is designed to be knitter friendly, with only two colours per row, and no floats of more than three stitches, each of the option will fit into the stitch count, with no additional maths required.
The colour work is charted and the lace, cable and texture options all have a chart and written instructions.
It is knit on a circular needle as a tube.
The live stitches from the waste yarn are then picked up and grafted onto the stitches at the end to create a smooth continuous loop, with or without a twist.

Needles
Because of the difference in gauge between different types of knitting (colour work, lace, cables etc) I recommend changing needle size, between sections.
My suggestion is that you swatch in texture pattern A, and pick a needle half a size smaller for the lace and half a size bigger for the colour work and the cable sections.
Suggested sizes
3.5mm (US 4) for the lace section
4mm (US 6) for the texture section
4.5mm (US 7) for the colour work and cable sections
Sample knit on 40cm (16”) circular
Notions
Cable needle (although you may like to try crossing cables without a cable needle)
A small amount (around 5g) of DK weight waste yarn.
A yarn needle for grafting.
Size
Depth 19.5cm (7.5”)
Circumference 80cm (31.5”)
