This Crochet Afghan was designed back in 1975 just before I married my husband. He and my mother were the first two to receive this design for Christmas. I have been holding on to it for years not knowing when I would use it again. I was going through my old patterns and found it and figured it was time to bring it out. Its a simple afghan with only two stitches that are repetitious. Four rows to the pattern. I made the first one all in one color, that was my mom’s. The second one was in two colors, hubby got that one. You can add a scallop edge to give it a finished look or leave it plain. I think the scallop looks good on a girls and plain on a boys. But that decision will be yours when you make it.
I like using 100% Acrylic for this afghan. A Wool/Acrylic Blend will also work well. I call it a postage stamp afghan, because back in the 70’s we bought our stamps by the sheet with several stamps to a page separated by perforations. The first time I laid it flat on the floor, it was my first impression.
The amount of yardage from 660 yards to 1,955 because of the three sizes it can be made in. You can very easily make it longer and/or wider by adding more stitches or rows. Its a 6 stitch pattern.
All you need to make this afghan is a crochet hook and enough yarn. Dye Lots are not that important if you are using 2 colors. A slight variation in the color will not show if you start a new pattern with a new dye lot.. It can also be made in 3 or 4 colors. You decide when to change colors. Experiment and enjoy.
