Potato field shawl
Why potato field, you ask? Well… The popcorns somehow made me think of potatoes in pretty aligned rows out in the field. Potatoes put down in the ground to grow into new ones. So the stripe in the shawl symbolizes the rows and the popcorn bump is the potato. Why, you ask again? Well, why not?!
SIZE AND YARN
For this shawl you need two different colors of yarn, one for the main color and one for the stripe (the potato rows!). The main color will use up much more yarn than your stripe yarn, but there will be some more yardage of the stripe color at the end with the last edge rows.
For my version I used a 3.5 mm hook (E / 4 hook) and around 750 meters in total and repeated pattern until I had 15 rows of potatoes. The yardage required varies depending on the yarn weight you choose and your desired shawl size, but usually somewhere around 600 – 1000 meters (656 – 1093 yards).
Main color:
A white speckled hand colored wool yarn, about 532 meters/ 581 yards.
Stripe color:
Panduro Yarn, bright orange about 200 meters/ 218 yards.
The size of my shawl after blocking:
A: 114 cm / 44.9 inches
B: 102 cm / 40 inches
C: 144 cm / 56.7 inches
You can vary the size and length however you like depending on the number of repeats and choice of yarn.
This is a versatile shawl that you can make with very different yarn weights. Recommended yarn is somewhere around a 2.5 – 6 mm hook size (around a C - J or a 2 – 10) for this shawl, but you can still make it with either smaller or larger hooks too. Basically something like light fingering, fingering, sport, DK or worsted, maybe even aran if you’re bold. More tips about yarn choices in the pattern.
