I fell for Brooklyn Tweed Vale yarn in the beautiful colour trio of Morel, Arabesque, and Barberry as soon as I saw them. I couldn’t help but think of dried flowers pressed in books preserving precious memories; bouquets of roses long ago dried hanging on walls, doors, or filling vases because the sentiments that they represent cannot be parted with; and bowls of pretty dry mixed petals decorating rooms that people feel relaxed in; and so the Potpourri shawl was born.

I love lightweight shawls and particularly enjoy them wide for a lovely wrap or very long for bundling up like a maxi scarf. Potpourri is designed for 200g of lace weight (2ply) yarn. It is a very relaxing knit that’s perfect for taking along with you and working on whenever you have some time as the lace pattern and shaping is easy to memorise, and there isn’t a purl stitch in sight!

The pattern is written for lace weight (2ply) yarn in the shawl size for 3 colours (the maxi scarf requires the same yardage). All of these elements may be adjusted and I have provided notes to assist with tailoring your knit.

All instructions are written and charted. A tick sheet with pattern and colour placement is also provided to help you plan your shawl and keep track of where you are up to while knitting.

Yarn
Main (MC): 100g/3.5oz. Lace weight yarn approx. 400m/437yd per 50g/1.76oz. (I used 100g/3.5oz. of Brooklyn Tweed Vale col. Morel).

Light Contrast (LC): 50g/1.76oz. Lace weight yarn approx. 400m/437yd per 50g/1.76oz. (I used 50g/1.76oz. of Brooklyn Tweed Vale col. Arabesque).

Dark Contrast (DC): 50g/1.76oz. Lace weight yarn approx. 400m/437yd per 50g/1.76oz. (I used 50g/1.76oz. of Brooklyn Tweed Vale col. Barberry).

or if you are using 2 colours you will need 100g/3.5oz. of CC to use wherever LC and DC are indicated.

Needles & Notions
Pair of 4mm (US 6) needles. I like to use an 80cm circular needle set but straight are fine also.
2 stitch markers (optional as they are only used as reminders to perform side shaping).

Tension/Gauge
21sts & 40 rows per 10cm (4”) using 4mm (US6) needles over garter stitch after blocking. Please note this will vary a lot with other yarns so please refer to Ravelry projects for more information.

Finished Measurements (approx.)
2 colour: 57cm (22.5”) wide x 230cm (90.5”) long (tip to tip).
3 colour: 57cm (22.5”) wide x 203cm (80”) long (tip to tip).
