If you are a new or beginner knitter who has learned to cast on, knit, purl and bind off then this pattern is for you! Practice what you’ve learned in this sampler cowl or scarf pattern. Of course more experienced knitters may also enjoy this simple knit.

This pattern uses only simple knit and purl stitches (and just a few yarn overs and simple decreases) to create a variety of textures that will help you begin to learn to read written knitting instructions. I’ve included charts for adventurous beginners that will help you learn to read your knitted fabric as well. The charts are on the last 2 pages of the pattern and do not need to be printed if you don’t want to use them.

Use the stitch patterns provided as written or just pick one, two or more to customize the look of your cowl.

If you wish to have a longer cowl that can be worn looped twice around the neck you can make each of the pattern sections longer or repeat the entire sequence 2 or 3 times until desired length. I recommend a final circumference of 46-48 inches for a warm and snug double looped cowl. Individual preference may vary.

You may also opt to make a scarf in which case I recommend a length of 60-72 inches, again, depending on individual preference. Remember, if making a longer cowl or scarf, more yarn will be required.

I’ve included a video link for the final step of seaming.
