Description: “The Haapsalu Lace Center organised a competition in autumn 2016 to create a personal pattern for the newly elected President of the Republic of Estonia, Kersti Kaljulaid, and to present the shawl to the President on her visit to Haapsalu in spring 2017. It cam as a pleasant surprise that the pattern I created had been chosen.

The President has her roots partly in Saaremaa and thus the Herringbone lace found on old gloves from Saaremaa, and the incontestable favourite in Haapsalu lace, the Lily of the Valley pattern, are both used. The patterns combine to create a blooming flower, which symbolises freshness and hope.
