A symmetrical triangular shawl featuring cat’s paw lace on a stocking stitch ground, and a garter stitch and eyelet border pattern, worked all in one piece. My shawl is in a laceweight yarn (100g / 800m skein) and measures approx. 66cm / 26” deep to the point of the triangle and 204cm / 80” across the wingspan.

I’d already knitted this yarn into a rectangular scarf using cat’s paw, and I loved the colour and the yarn, but the scarf was getting longer and longer…… so I unravelled it, and worked out what would be a better format for it - still using my favourite cat’s paw lace. I’m pretty sure I bought the yarn at Wonderwool Wales in 2012, and it might be something like Rooster Delight - it feels as if it may have some Blue-Faced Leicester in it, but I’m afraid the label is long gone…… Still, isn’t that the beauty of wool? Knit, unknit, reknit.

I used 4mm needles, and found a longer circular needle (120cm) useful as the wingspan increased. The number of cat’s paws increases from one to twenty-seven with a few leaps on the way, and there are a few alternative ideas given in the pattern. If you find the chart (on the last page) is too small, do please get in touch, and I’ll send it to you in a way that may make it easier for you to print multiple pages of it, and enlarge it. If you’re new to using charts, you’ll find the instructions are also in written form, which will perhaps help you follow the chart.

I hope you enjoy knitting, and wearing, this sweet shawl.
