Princess Polka Dots
Princess Polka Dots is a modular hexagon crochet blanket designed by my daughter, Betsy, when she was 8 years old.
She had been to an art club that was studying the work of Yayoi Kusama (aka The Princess of Polka Dots) and they had been designing polka dot based art pieces which I said looked like crochet designs. Enthused by this comment, Betsy went on to design a number of blankets for me, this one being my favourite.
From her original drawing I decided that hexagon motifs would probably work the best to create the wavy lines of colour and I used two different sized polka dots using the same hexagon pattern also as per her drawing.
I chose Stylecraft Special DK for the blanket with Betsy choosing the colours. The only thing that is slightly different to her original drawing is the amount of black and dark grey sections but I just couldn’t fit them in without making the blanket unmanageably huge!
As well as 10 x 100g of White (1001), we also used 1 x 100g* of each:
Fondant (1241)
Clementine (1853)
Citron (1263)
Spring Green (1316)
Sherbet (1034)
Wisteria (1432)
Fiesta (1257)
A Hint of Silver (1807)
Black (1002)
note that for the coloured yarn you will only use approx 50g of each.
You will also need a 4mm hook.
The yarn can be substituted for any DK weight yarn, alternatively you can make the blanket using different weight yarn but do adjust your hook size accordingly and note that your finished size will be different.
Using the recommended yarn and a 4mm hook each hexagon measures approx. 9cm across.
The finished blanket is huge 135cm x 160cm but you can of course alter the size as per your own personal preference.
The pattern comes in both UK and US terminology, with both written and charted instructions for all elements including the join as you go method and the border.
I have had the pattern extensively technical edited to ensure it is error free but any errata will be linked (and dated) here should they be required.
