Pattern Description from Heirloom Knitting: “The finished size of this 1 ply shawl is 48 inches (120cm) square. It is in the tradition of Shetland Crepe shawls and is knitted with a plain garter stitch centre, (but this time, knitted as a diamond) with an Old Shell patterned border. The edging is Clematis Edging, which is a very early twentieth century European pattern. Experienced knitted could replace this with any other edging of their choice. Again traditionally, this design is knitted without any sewing being necessary (except to graft the two ends of the edging) if knitted in the round on a circular needle, but it can be made in other ways if preferred - directions are given.”

Note: Useful advice is given at various key stages of this pattern that demonstrate some of the alterations to the basic shawl design that can be made. Additionally, helpful advice about working the Old Shell Pattern by identifying the ‘centre stitch,’ is given with Project 3. Read the following advice through before working, in order to be clear about what you choose to do.

Materials: (for the 48-inch size)

• 9 x 1/2 oz (14g) hanks of Jamieson & Smith’s Shetland Cobweb 1 ply - wound into balls
• 2.75mm Circular needle - (British Size 12), 40 or 60 cm long or equivalent knitting needles
• Tapestry needle for final finishing
• Row counter optional but recommended
• Stitch markers or contrasting lengths of wool to mark corner positions if making in the round on the circular needle, ideally three the same colour and one different to mark the start of round.
