Pronghorn
Since I have a real liking for nature’s most peculiar, weird, mysterious or misunderstood underdogs I decided to design some of them for anyone who wants to get to know these natural weirdos a little better!
The pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) inhabits grasslands and deserts from southern Canada, through the west of the US, into Mexico. Although it looks like a mash-up of a goat, a deer and an antelope, it is neither. It is in a family of its own and its closest living relatives are the giraffes and okapi! Also, the two-pronged protrusions on their heads are neither horns nor antlers: they are both! These horntlers are compressed keratin, like horns, but shed every year, like antlers. And although pronghorns are good athletes, they spend most of their time grazing the day away.
This model measures 18 cm from nose to bum. The pattern contains a comprehensive tutorial on constructing the (limbs of the) pronghorn.
This project is a medium knit, it requires some intarsia, i-cord and short row knitting, knitting both in the round and flat and transferring/picking up of stitches. This pronghorn is knitted on (2.25 mm, US 1, UK 13, 15 cm-) double pointed needles,in Rowan Felted Tweed (157) camel and (188) Jaffa, Lana Grossa Voi Ragazza (07) white and Phildar Laine Mohair Soie (0101) Noir.
