The Protagonist Top is a wardrobe staple to fulfill your dreams of being the protagonist in a rom-com.

With rolled hems, wide sleeves, and slightly cropped length, this oversized top is a little undone, but nice enough for Summer Fridays. (And maybe every other day of the week!)

Protagonist is knit in the round from the top down and is easy stockinette, so it’s great for an ambitious beginner or a more experienced one wanting a relaxing knit.

Skills:
Knitting in the round
Short row shaping

Materials:
DK Weight Cotton/Linen Blend
US5, US 8 needles, or whatever size you need to get gauge
Waste yarn
Tapestry Needle
Scissors
Tape Measure

I knit this project entirely on 16” circulars, but depending on your knitting style and size of your project, you may want a 20-40” needle and your preferred smaller circumference (DPN, Magic Loop, Shorties, etc).

Fit Notes:
Please note that the Protagonist is intended to have 11-13” of positive ease. To select a size, measure your chest and add your desired ease. Then select the size that is closest to that number. The sample is knit to a size G and modeled on a 42” chest.

Sizes: A,B,C,D (E,F,G,H) I,J,K,L M,N,O,P
Actual Finished Measurement 43,45,47,49 (51,53,55,57) 59,61,63,65 67,69,71,73 inches

This top is slightly cropped; if you would like to lengthen the body, you will need an additional 6,6,6,6 (7,7,7,7) 7,8,8,8 8,9,9,9 yards per inch.

Yarn substitution
Use a yarn to create a fabric that you will love! I designed this with a cotton-linen blend, so using wool or other materials may result in a different effect.

I’m also of the belief that yarn weights are flexible, so if you want to knit this in fingering weight for a more lightweight top, I say go for it! It will be more open-weave, but the summery vibes will be there.
