The Protection Sigil Hat and Cowl patterns are inspired by Icelandic magical staves (galdrastafir), which are symbols credited with various magical effects. For this design, I created a protection sigil incorporating the number 4 for stability and the Algiz rune (ᛉ) for protection, luck, and victory. The resulting symbol resembles a compass, aligning with the intention of providing protection from all directions, making it a practical and magical pattern for any knitter.

PATTERN NOTES

  • Stitching the sigil onto the hat BEFORE folding the hem will allow you to enclose the backside for a clean finish.
  • The Hat begins with a Provisional Cast On. I prefer the crochet method, but you are welcome to use whichever version works best for you.
  • The extra circular needles are used in this design to help hold the Provisional Cast On stitches during the folded hem process, as well as during the 3-Needle Bind Off.
