Provenance Mitts
The Provenance Mitts are a pair of fingerless gloves constructed with a thumb gusset design and vivid colorwork. The basis for the design is the symbols for Sankofa, the scroll work on the palm and the animal symbol. Both symbols mean “look back and go get it” which refers to never forgetting your ancestral history. These gloves are a reminder that much of what we have in life comes from the work of the hands that came before us. Without parents, grandparents, ancestors, using their hands to pave the way, how would we be able to stand in the space we occupy today.
This pattern is built from bottom up using 1x1 ribbing and 2 colors for the colorwork. These gloves are moderately difficult in that there are very few places in the pattern that truly repeat once you begin the palm, however, the image chosen guides you clearly as you work. This is a pattern for people who want a quick knit but the joy of a project to distract the brain. The palm gives some relief as it mirrors itself on top and bottom.
The large size has an extended motif in the wrist and finger areas that is not present on the small size.
