Pruitt Gloves
“in the darkness, in the worst of it, in the absence of light and hope — we sing.”
— monsignor john michael pruitt, midnight mass
This design began as a commission from a friend, who requested a pair of gloves inspired by the Netflix horror-drama Midnight Mass. The fiery red hearts on the palms — stitched on after the fact using duplicate stitch — evoke the sacred heart, while the architectural design on the back of the hand is styled after cathedral windows.
Admittedly, as a deeply non-religious, genderqueer and generally queer person, I had mixed feelings about designing a pair of gloves so deeply steeped in Catholic iconography. However, they were an interesting venue for revisiting complex experiences and relationships with church — something I’m sure many of us, queer or not, can relate to.
These fingerless gloves are knit cuff-up in the round using stranded colourwork and easy thumb gusset shaping. Sizing can be adjusted using yarn weight and needle size.
