Pueblo Sunrise
photographs by karinknits designs; technical editing by Katherine Vaughan
Just as sun rises and gives warmth and light to the dark, early morning on the pueblos of the American Southwest, so do the gradient shades of this one-piece cardigan sweater flow from ridge to ridge. Elongated slipped stitches bring each shade over the next set of Garter st. ridges. It is knit flat from the bottom up; the fronts and back are worked together to the armhole. The fronts are then placed on stash yarn, while stitches are cast on to work the shaped sleeves and the back. When you reach the shoulders, the neck stitches are placed on stash yarn, and the sleeve shapings are reversed.
There are only two seams in the entire garment. This construction is what I call “Kirigami Knitting.” Kirigami is like origami, but with scissors. Kirigami knitting leaves openings that fold in and down, minimizing seams and allowing the ease of one-piece knitting.
