The Pueblo Wrap is the first in a series of wraps I have designed which were inspired by Navajo ceremonial wearing blankets from the early 1800’s. The Navajo learned to weave from the Pueblos, so I named this most simple wrap after the Pueblo Tribes. Even though these wraps are knit rather than woven, they were designed to convey the same simplicity of early woven textiles. The striped pattern is symmetrical, yet has a subtle rhythm.

There are three wrap designs included in this pattern. ‘The Classic Wrap’, which has a generous width to allow for more drape, features a simple, elegant two color design. ‘The Pocket Wrap’ is a bit more narrow, uses three colors, and includes fun striped pockets and a practical button closure. ‘The Skinny Stripe Wrap’, shown in neutrals, is similar to The Classic wrap, as they are both the same width, and both use two colors, but it includes a thin stripe through the wider stripes, and button closure. All three wraps were designed to be practical, versatile garments, knit entirely in stockinette stitch with garter stitch selvedges, utilizing a simple yet effective technique for joining colors to create a clean, sturdy edge. This pattern includes detailed instructions for joining yarns, afterthought pockets, vertical button holes, and advice on choosing yarns. It would make an ideal project for beginner/intermediate knitters, and provide a relaxing knit for more advanced knitters.

I knit these wraps in Madelinetosh Vintage, because I love the beautiful depth of color and drape this yarn provides. The purl ridges between each stripe help to set off each color, as well as to provide a subtle outline between stripes, and give the garment more stability. These wraps are a relaxing and fairly quick knit, and produce elegant, versatile pieces of knitwear. In cool weather, I wear these as shoulder wraps, and in the winter months, as thick, warm scarves. The options for customizing this pattern are endless, allowing each knitter to create their own unique work of art!

Yardage was carefully calculated while designing these, so that 5 skeins should be enough yarn for each of these wraps. The colors used are: Classic Wrap - Filigree (3) and Chicory (2). Pocket Wrap - Chicory (3), Magnolia Leaf (1) and Coquette (1). Skinny Stripe Wrap - Smokestack (3) and El Greco (2).

Finished size for two color wraps: 18.5” x 62”
Finished size for three color pocket wrap: 16” x 65”

(Wraps will grow a bit in length and narrow a bit with use, but they can be easily corrected with some light blocking. They can also be lengthened by knitting more rows, either around the center stripe, or on the solid sections at the ends of the wrap.)
