Puffin Washcloths, Potholders, or Afghan Squares Crochet Pattern

These three (plus two bonus) cute puffin colourwork crochet patterns can be used as wash cloths, hot pads, or afghan blocks. For washcloths or hot pads, be sure to use 100% cotton yarn.
The three squares shown were made with five skeins of Loops & Threads Classic cotton (or Everyday Cotton) in Black, Bright Orange, Tomato, Twine, and White. For a solid background on all three, an extra ball of Twine is required.
Finished objects are 24x24cm. Five charts and written row-by-row instructions are included. Patterns created with Stitch Fiddle Software.

Materials:

  • 5 mm hook
  • One skein each of Loops & Threads Classic Cotton/Everyday Cotton in Black, Bright Orange, Tomato, Twine, and White for Puffins 1, 2, and 3 as shown. (You will need one extra skein each of Twine and White to make Bonus A & B puffins)
  • Finishing needle

Stitches:
Ch chain
SC single crochet
FSC* foundation single crochet (optional)

Following the Pattern:
Start at the bottom, working up. Turn at each end and work both sides. Use bobbins for long colour changes, or carry the yarn for short ones.

Each square can be started with Foundation Single Crochet (FSC), or with a chain. Whichever method you prefer, use it for all squares to ensure equal finished size.
