Puffy Petal
Who can resist a flower with plump, plush petals? The Puffy Petal is the perfect excuse to dive into your stash of colourful Worsted-Aran scrap yarns and transform them into a playful decoration for your hairpin, keychain, or anywhere that needs a little charm. This delightful project starts with shaping the petals and pistil individually, then moves on to stuffing and sewing them together for a wonderfully satisfying finish.
The techniques are as simple as they come: cast-on, increasing & decreasing stitches, bind-off.
But don’t let the simplicity fool you – this project introduces the precision of directional increases and decreases, making it a fantastic practice piece for beginners. You will get hands-on experience with shaping techniques like Make 1 Right / Left (M1R / M1L), and see how they create clean, symmetrical edges.
Best of all, this pattern is permanently free! It is just too fun and accessible not to share. I cannot wait the creative bouquet of Puffy Petals grow on Ravelry.
Happy Knitting !
Yarns
- (Scarp) Aran-weight yarns: for example, Novita 7 Veljestä (100g = 200m), 30g – 35g (5 petals and 1 pistil, each weights roughly 5g)
- Double-pointed needles: 2mm or 3mm (Thinner needles help reduce the possible gaps caused by stitches increasing / decreasing, to better seal the fibre fill)
- A tapestry needle for sewing the petals and pistil together
- Polyester fibre fills
Gauge
The gauge doesn’t matter too much, as long as your gauge is able to seal the fibre fills. In the instruction, 2mm needles with Novita 7 Veljestä yarns result in 12 sts - 15 row - 5 cm gauge.
