This classic little baby vest has been adapted from an original vintage knitting pattern from the 1940’s. It uses 1x1 rib and needle size changes to add elasticity to the design, meaning that minimal shaping techniques are used which makes this a nice beginner friendly pattern. This cute little vest is not only a sweet addition to any newborn babies attire but also super functional and hard wearing garment when knit from machine wash friendly yarn. The neckline and shoulders are finished with an I-cord edged open seam and fastened with buttons, meaning that it will never be a tight squeeze to fit over the little ones head. Choose to knit the vest either flat or circular, depending on your preference:
The flat pattern is knit from the bottom up, back and front panels worked separately and then joined at the top of the armhole with the finishing of the shoulder seams. Stitches are then picked up along the armhole edge and the sleeves are knit from the shoulder to cuff and shaped as you work. The body and sleeve seams are finished by seaming using the mattress stitch technique.

In the circular version of the pattern, the front and back panels are knit together in the round from the bottom up, to the armholes. The stitches are then split and the upper body shaping is worked separately and finished the same as the flat version. The sleeve stitches and then picked up along the edge of the armhole, then knit in the round to cuff and shaped as you work.
