A dynamic motif which is quickly memorized gives a graphic look to this simple cowl. A touch of whimsy comes from the introduction of just a few rows of a second motif — the dots, or ‘“punctuation”. The possibilities for colour variations are limitless: neutrals or brights, just two colours or as many as you can fit in.

The cowl is worked in the round to produce a long tube. The two ends of the tube are joined using Kitchener stitch to make a circle.

Finished dimensions: 9” / 23 cm height; 31” / 79 cm circumference.

Yarn:
Approximately 700 meters / 780 yards light fingering.
The original cowl was made with Holst Garn Supersoft 100% Uld in 4 colours, in the following quantities: main colour (MC) 440 m / 480 yds; contrast colour 1 (CC1) 160 m / 180 yds; CC2 60 m / 70 yds; CC3 24 m / 28 yds.

Ideally, the cowl should be knitted in a woolly Shetland-style yarn which will help the carried yarn (“floats”) stay in place and will “bloom” after washing to produce a smooth, sturdy fabric.

Possible substitute yarns are Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift, Harrisville Shetland, or KnitPicks Palette.
Substituting a heavier yarn weight is not recommended, as the tube construction plus the carried strands of yarn are likely to produce a cowl which is too warm to wear.

Although gauge is not critical for this project, please note that a change in gauge may affect the finished measurements and the quantity of yarn required.
