This is a slouchy, loose fitting hat. There is not much negative ease. The crown is an envelope closure which has been bound off without any decreasing. It is then folded over to create the interesting top.
The tree design is repeated on the top and the bottom in the written directions, but you may want to use only one motif on the hat.
