Puzzle Blocks
One booklet with two patterns.
You could make either of these two afghans just because they look pretty or because both have a deeper mathematical significance.
Order of Magnitude is designed to help children with counting and starting to assimilate the concepts of multiplication and area. Many adults would probably need to study it for some time to work out what is special about the arrangements of squares. It is one solution to a problem posed at the front of the booklet. The other solutions are given at the back so you could choose to use one of them instead of the design shown.
Place Order is an exercise in logical thinking. Again, the problem and solution are given. This can also be made at any size you want.
Both are made from mitred squares but could be from any knit or crochet squares. There are suggestions for other squares you might want to use.
The afghans in the photos were made child-size but the instructions tell you how to scale them up to the size you want. There is also information about converting them into wall-hangings.
Place Order uses 14 different colours so could be useful for using up some small quantities of yarn.
Read the story of these afghan on Ravelry or on Woolly Thoughts web site.
