Quadrell in Milanese dialect means tile or brick. This large square “tile” is easy to knit and is fit for beginners as well. It works up fast with a single ball of Spring Rainbow by Katia and US 9 (5,5 mm) needles. It allows to learn some very interesting techniques like Navajo knitting, which allows to treble a thin yarn to make a thicker one from a single yarn ball, and pick up and knit.
A single square is 15 ¾” (40 cm) and can be used as a chair cover, a cat rug or placemat. Four squares sewn together before picking up and knitting the border can be turned into a baby blanket fit for a crib or a stroller. With 6 squares you will produce a larger lightweight child’s bed blanket for warm seasons, Two squares can be sewn together, back to back, to produce a cushion cover, but you may work a single square and use it to renovate and old cushion by sewing it on a worn out cover. If you need several squares, like in the above examples, work half of them starting from the outer end of the yarn ball, and half of them starting from the center of the ball, so that the color progression is different. Once the squares have been sewn up, you can knit the border with a very long circular needle, or work each side separately on long straight needles.

Quadrell in milanese significa mattone, piastrella. Questa piastrellona di facile realizzazione e indicata anche per i principianti assoluti si realizza rapidamente con una matassa di Spring Rainbow di Katia e ferri da 5,5 mm. Permette di imparare alcune tecniche utili come la lavorazione Navaho, che permette di usare un filato sottile con ferri grossi triplicandolo pur usando solo un gomitolo, e la ripresa delle maglie.
Una sola piastrella misura 40 cm di lato e può essere usata come coprisedia, come “sottogatto” o come tovaglietta. Realizzando 4 piastrelle e cucendole assieme prima di eseguire il bordo otterrete un’ampia copertina da passeggino o carrozzina, con 6 piastrelle otterrete una copertina da lettino adatta alle stagioni più miti, con due piastrelle cucite assieme potrete ottenere un cuscino, ma se preferite potrete anche realizzare una sola piastrella e cucirla sul dritto di un copricuscino che si è rovinato per rinnovarlo. Per le copertine suggerisco di realizzare metà delle piastrelle partendo dal filo esterno del gomitolo e metà partendo dal capo interno, alternando così la progressione dei colori. Potrete realizzare il bordo con un ferro circolare molto lungo dopo aver cucito tra loro le piastrelle.
